Tram, cable tram, trolley, trolley bus, cable car... These particular ones are like the ones they used to have in Melbourne and Geelong (Australia). There is a continuously moving cable in a trench between the tracks, a driver operated mechanism grips the cable and the tram (cable car) is pulled along till the gripper mechanism is released. -- Peter Williams
