Tom, I've never owned a Leica but I do own a Fed (Fed 4, circa 1975), and the thing is built like a tank. Someone once gave me another one which had died and I had great fun taking it apart. The construction was just about all metal, but not machined to very high standards IIRC.

The lens, an Industar-61 f2.8/53,is pretty good - although a little cool for my taste.
At 20GBP, when I was camera-less after some mongrel stole my original SV outfit, it stood me in good stead until I could re-equip - not easy when you're carrying two kids and a mortgage!

That is interesting, Paul, as I have been thinking of getting one. Are you saying there is no real obvious difference in quality of construction?
