Thanks Paul I have to agree, in my procedure I'm not specific, the exposure slider isn't adjusted for image effect but to optimise the saturation point, same for the shadows (black point). The image can "look" pretty bad when the whitepoint and blackpoints are optimised and as you allude, once it's set don't touch, make all subsequent visual adjustments using the brightness and contrast sliders.
