Very true! For some things that will be very useful, but for the moment
all my drives are FireWire 400kbps spec ... It will be a while before I
actually need to go twice as fast. ;-)

You can even get a combined card (usually 2 FireWire and 3 USB 2.0
ports) for around $60, IIRC.
If I were you, I'd plan to add one of them to the system hardware. USB
1.1 is way too slow for multi Gbyte data transfer needs. FireWire
(400Kbps) would have done 33Gbytes in about 25 minutes.
