I just got a phone message from a Pentax support guy. He talked with the engineers in Japan and has definatively found the safe flash trigger voltage. They say that the *ist-DS is safe for 480V, 1.26A max.
There was a lot of mis/disinformation out there on that, so this should be at least one solid datapoint.
I've always thought those concerns were somewhat overblown.
I've used my istD with a Metz 60CT-2, a set of really old Normans and a somewhat more recent set of Photogenics.
Amazingly, the darned thing just keeps working.
