...specifically for the purpose as vinyl records are recorded with pre-emphasis (non-linear frequency response) therefore the amplified signal from the pick-up needs to be de-emphasized by passing it though a filter that adheres to RIAA specifications. RadioShack used to have a cheap battery powered RIAA Phone Pre- amp for this purpose. Plus there are a heap on eBay at around the US$25 mark.
