The Times photo editor asked for a 500k jpeg and did his own BW conversion. I was surprised that they didn't want a larger file. I went with medium compression, thinking more pixels would be more important than optimum compression. I'm sure they have a formula for all their photo parameters. When you look through the paper, every shot has almost identical tonality and contrast. Of course some differences remain, but they obvously strive for uniformity.
