Thanks Mark. No problem with copyright. The Times' standard freelance contract is for non-exclusive use. They retain rights to reproduce the pic only for their own publications, such as NY Times mag and the Herald Tribune. The copyright remains mine. As far as I know, this is the only freelance photo contract they use. The reputation may be unjustified.
