When I came back from GFM last June, I had a LowePro Stealth backpack
jam-packed with gear, including a PowerBook *and* an iBook. When I
checked in, I had it casually slung over one shoulder. No questions
asked, nothing weighted. The LowePro Stealth is within carry-on size
restriction limits, so no attention drawn.

I think a lot of it is to do with demeanour. If you look like you're
carrying on something heavy, then they will notice and weigh it. I had no
problem and it was definitely more than 5kg.
