Subject: Re: Ist D build quality?
Welcome to the list. I don't think there is a significant difference in quality. Both are fine cameras. There are some control differences, with the *istD being aimed at a more experienced photographer. But the important difference to me was the availability of the battery grip on the *istD. I prefer the extended battery life, the feel of a larger camera, and the convenience of a side mounted shutter release for vertical shooting. A new *istD is still priced higher than the *istDS at B&H. In fact, it's still at the same price it was at when I bought my second camera about 9 months ago. I haven't seen the two cameras offered new at the same price. Where did you see this?
Paul,
The prices in the UK seem to be 599 for the D and 699 for the Ds - but the Ds currently has a 100 rebate from Pentax.
I originally posted this query a few days ago - but, not being the brightest flashbulb in the box, I sent it the wrong address - and, after receiving no feedback (!), went for the *istD (supposed to be arriving on Monday)
The deal I went for was at www.cameraworld.co.uk who are selling the D + Grip + 18-35mm lens + 2Gb microdrive for 699 - although, in my case, I went for the 18-55mm lens and dropped the microdrive (package still 699)
The grip was a big factor in my decision to go for the D - and the additional controls will be appreciated in the future (hopefully)
Coming from an E20, my only real concern is dead/stuck pixels - I don't know how prevalent they are on the Pentax DSLR's, but I sure wish that they had that terrific Olympus pixel mapping feature. I could have gone E-1, but I've got grave doubts about the future of 4/3 - and, anyway, I'd have to put my wife on the streets to afford the lenses.
Thanks for the welcome - I hope to graze quietly on the sidelines and pick up some tips.
Regards
Pete
