I can only say that the DA 16-45 result is atypical. Perhaps 
it was loose on the tripod?

I tested the DA 16-45 against both the DA 40 and the FA 20, 
at comparable focal lengths. The test subject was a 
mud-brick wall taken from a meter away or so. The primes 
were a bit better (at actual pixels) up to f5.6. At f8 the 
DA 16-45 was as sharp as the primes.
