I have a rule, if it is not in the bag and with me at all times sell it. (except tripod)
Another rule is, don't buy bigger bag.
These rules keep me from buying stuff I don't need. I always ask myself do I want to carry it the whole day on my back. :)

Those are very good rules. I don't follow them as I find I have photographic "moods" that means I want options for different kits, but my rules are in the same vein:

- If I won't carry it for an entire day, I don't want it.
- Everything I want for a day's shooting must fit in one bag.
- The bag must be small enough to carry all day.

Anything that falls out of common use gets sold, other than specialty items (like macro lenses).
