Re: ist-D at ISO 1600, worth it?

Definitely use available light. ISO 1600 with the *ist D/DS is quite 
clean, particularly if you use RAW format and do your own rendering 
into RGB. I generally get much better results with the DS and ISO 1600, 
particularly for color work, than I see with film.

I do recommend RAW format for this kind of stuff. Stage lighting is 
often quite contrasty: with RAW conversion processing, you can do a lot 
to mitigate that contrast. Use the spot metering mode and try to keep 
the highlights from getting burned out.
