Dust on the sensor is inevitable over time anyway ... zoom lenses act as air pumps and pull dust into the interior of the camera. I change lenses pretty frequently and have not had all that much of an issue with dust. When some appears and is objectionable, simply clean the sensor.
So far, I have not cleaned the *ist DS sensor ... I can see some dust building up and I'll clean it before I head out on my trip, but it hasn't been a problem at all.
I had to clean my sensor for the first time. I noticed one day that at approximately the upper right "third" region of my images there was a dark spot. When stopped down, the spot became black, and well defined. I was sure I would have to get some sensor swabs and go at it. Visiting Hooper Camera (they were convenient one day) I asked to purchase CCD cleaning equipment. They were fresh out, but had a blower bulb handy. A couple of puffs from the blower bulb and my CCD is not apparently dust free. I hope its always so easy.
