To do it successfully generally requires you to backup all your data, 
scrub the computer's disk clean and set it up again from scratch with XP. 
MS claim that it's possible to upgrade without going through all this, but 
it doesn't tend to work well for machine that have been in use for a 
while. XP also requires a reasonably modern machine to run at a decent 
speed. Mind you, it's worth it.
