Inappropriate removal of USB devices may corrupt files/FAT but will likely not damage the media or device. I have a friend who regularly corrupts their CF cards (pulling them out of an Epson printer/scanner during write), if I don't repair them before trying to open the data occasionally my WK2 system will display a BSOD but after the media has been subjected to a Disk Repair and Format they are always good as gold again.
