Practice more ;-) The MLU trick works on majority of MXen. In fact, it
should work on any MX if it's up to factory specs, in my opinion and
understanding of how it works. It also works on Spotmatics, and
probably any other Spotmatic shutter derived camera, e.g. K1000.
Tap it a bit sideways, and very quickly from a height, so your finger
bounces back from it before the shutter is released. With practice,
you can achieve near 100% success rate.
Some MX's do have a hair trigger release.
I believe if you peel back the snakeskin from the front, below the shutter
release, and open tha access, the rod length is adjustable.
