Tom,

I think a certain other-worldliness (lack of focus on money, rather than product) has been one of the charms of Pentax over the years. They will probably never regain the market position they had in the 1960s and 1970s, but quality and quantity are never bedfellows for long.

I hope Pentax will survive as a quirky niche player offering petite, highly ergonomic bodies and some superb lenses.

For those Pentax doesn't, and won't, support, we can only say farewell. But for the other 98%, come on in, the water's lovely. Okay, it's a bit chilly at the moment, but it'll warm up.

John

PS: Because I, too, was a little concerned about the future (I read too many Herb Chong posts), I bought a second D body.
That both helped Pentax and gave me a backup/source of spares.

Hi John,

I only felt slightly offended... not to worry. Thanks for the reply.

I agree with what you say in principle regarding 'promoting it and buying the products', but I don't see it as necessarially making a difference.

The precedent is that many here HAVE supported Pentax for years and we end up with the present situation in the market and our subsequent perceptions. Pentax has deeper pockets than any of us individually, so I'm loathe to throw money at a company that may not know where it's going.

Tom,

I wasn't meaning to direct my remarks at you specifically. And whilst I take your point about freedom of speech, it seems to me that there is little point in subscribing to a Pentax list if you have nothing good to say about Pentax.

Fortunately, Pentax is a company with more than one string to its bow, and I suspect (and hope) that it will survive the present downturn in its fortunes. (Note that it's latest figures, and forecasts, still show it is making profits.)

However, they won't be helped by so-called Pentax supporters who spend their time in a public forum telling people to buy a brand of camera made by a copier company.

And with all due respect to you and Rob S, one of the reasons this list is more interesting/lively whatever is because Pentax users are people who don't follow the herd.

The best way to make sure Pentax survives and thrives is to promote it and buy the products (when you can find them :-) ).

Best wishes

John

Pentax user from 1973 to at least 2043 (hopefully)

Because there's still a concept called "Freedom of Speech" here, as much as I hate using that grossly overused and abused cliche.

So why don't you just go off and buy a bloody Canon and unsubscribe? This is a Pentax list, but sometimes it reads like a piece of Canon Marketing propaganda.

I've got two *ist D, and several superb lenses which can't be bettered by Canon at any price. Using Ebay (which still exists, by the way) I have managed to acquire several excellent lenses at very good prices.

Pentax made a serious mistake with their choice of sensor (and sensor size) with the MZD or whatever it was called, and it cost them dear, but they are coming back. Give them time. And meanwhile shoot some pictures.

And stop whingeing.

It's the one bad aspect of an otherwise excellent list.

I recently recommended a Canon 20D to a colleague who owned no 35mm gear to speak of. I don't think I would recommend a 350D. Build quality seems inferior. I did mention that Pentax would be a decent choice because of the backward compatibility and the resulting opportunity to buy high quality used lenses, but I said that conventional wisdom would suggest going with the Canon.
Paul

Exactly the way I feel Paul. I can't in good faith steer someone else towards *starting* a Pentax system at this point in time. If all they wanted is a DSLR with one zoom lens, maybe. But even then...
