I don't have experience with the 31, so take this with a grain of
salt. Also, I belong to the Frank Theriault school of sharpness, so I
haven't shot many brick walls that didn't have interesting people
hanging out nearby.

The FA35 is my favorite lens. A lot of the pictures in my photoblog
are taken with it on the istD--it is my standard lens. It balances
well on the istD and I'm very happy with the image quality. I don't
think you will be dissappointed if you get one. The 31, while nice,
seems like it would be a little bit too big for my taste.
