Reminds me of an excellent piece of logic from Norwegian author Kjell Aukrust. He maintained that the vikings weren't much to brag about. According to official statistics, the average height of new recruits to the army has been slowly increasing from year to year since statistics began in the twenties. By extrapolating the curve backwards in time, it is clear that the vikings were actually the size of a wine bottle.

Considering the Romans were about a millenium before the vikings, they must indeed have been small...:-)
