But if you went in and said you wanted the $3,600 worth of kit, I bet you
would be able to work out a lower price without too much trouble, depending
on the actual people who owned/ran the particular store. Try getting more
than the generic discount from a chain store.

That's not a bad approach. I wonder what the end unit cost + overhead is
for a small independent camera store compared to a big chain compared to a
mail order outlet. I find most small stores are asking MFR list or close to
it.
Assuming (I have no idea) the small independent stores have sufficient
headroom to negotiate down in price, it may behoove them to offer a lower
price to begin with instead of 'gouging' the consumer for an extra $300 -
$400 from the start. That could improve their traffic through the store
overall. I imagine their reponse to this idea would be that sales are
already suffering due to the high volume competitors, so making less on each
sale is going in the wrong direction. The argument then becomes circular,
because if I take the same attititude, wanting the most I can get, the store
loses out totally on the sale.
