Alin, I can and have used the *ist D all day and every day for several days without ever using the menu to change settings! If you have one you will know that you can set up three sets of settings, one of which will almost certainly be your normal way of working. I took the time to do that, and now find I rarely need to switch from one to the other.

I agree with Christian that all of the changes I need to make for normal shooting are on easily accessed controls, not buried in menus: i.e.
ISO rating
Quality (RAW, TIFF, Jpeg 1-3)
White balance
Exposure mode
Shutter speed
Aperture (or on the lens I use)
Shooting Mode (Green, Program, Tv, Ap, Manual, B)
Exposure compensation
Bracketing
Drive mode (single shot, continuous, timer, remote)
Red-eye reduction
DOF preview
AE-Lock
Multiple exposure
AF - select Auto, central or specific point

The first half-dozen are those I would use most often, I guess.
Would anyone like to tell me what else you would expect to use during the course of a normal session?

With all of the whinging and whining during the recent "Why would you choose..." thread, an outsider could not be blamed for thinking that Pentax, in the MZ-S and *-ist D had produced two absolute dogs of cameras, instead of the excellent tools they both are. Ok, if you really really need 8 fps and to shoot 30 shots in 6 seconds, go buy a Canon or a Nikon, but please don't sit on this list and grump about Pentax not having sunk a huge amount of resources in producing such a beast, when it is generally acknowledged that the market for them is now pretty much owned by Canon. Not reasonable behaviour on your part, IMO!

Rant over...

 Christian,

Can you use the ist d for an extensive period without resorting to
the LCD back? I doubt so. That was my point.

BTW, I too prefer dials. [Why can't they make an MX digital!? With
all these variations on the *ist theme an MX-D will surely fit in
 the r&d budget].
