according to their annual reports, Canon made 15.8% profit margin on
their digital camera division, the highest in the industry, while
Nikon made a little over 5%, even after having a dismal year with
digital compact cameras. i believe Sony also made money. Kodak may or
may not have made money, but they are close to the break even point.
most other camera manufacturer's lost money and are expected to lose
even more money in the next couple of years. Pentax is one of the
companies many financial analysts expect to withdraw completely from
the digital camera market since they will continue to lose money. the
analysts that have published research predict that the top 4 or 5
makers by volume are going to grow their market share and everyone
else will leave. Pentax is barely even in the top 10.
