G'day Shel,

I'm using version 3.80 and it'll do all the things David Oswald mentioned.

To create a gallery these are the steps I've used in the past. The
first step assumes that the images have not already been re sized for
web use.

- Step 1

Start IrfanView :-)

Go to File > Batch Conversion / Rename

Navigate to the folder that contains the files you want. Select the
image/s then click "Add"

Select the output directory.

Select "Batch Conversion". (you could also do a batch rename at this
point if you wanted. This would make it a 3 step process)

Set the output file type .jpg, .tif ... etc. Click on "Options" to set
compression amounts, include / exclude exif information plus some
other things.

Check the "Use advanced options" box.

Click on the "Set advanced options" button. This is where you set
resize values*, DPI, sharpness, brightness, contrast, gamma
corrections and other stuff. (The problem with using Irfamview to make
these kind of adjustments is there is no real time preview.)

*Tip: when resizing a group of images that are a mix of portrait and
landscape, to keep the long edge of the image, at say 650 pixels, set
the resize value to 650x650. Make sure though, that you set the DPI
(if needed) and check the "Preserve aspect ratio" box.

Once you've got all the settings dialed in, click on the "Start" button

- Step 2 (create the HTML gallery)

In IrfanView go to File > Thumbnails. This brings up the thumbnail window.

Navigate to the folder that contains the resized images

Go to Options > Set thumbnail options. Here is where you set the
thumbnail size 50x50, 65x65...300x300, thumbnail border & gallery page
background colour (it will preview the results in the thumbnail
window) .

Select the files in the thumbnail window and go to File > Save
selected thumbs as HTML file. This will bring up a dialogue box with
some self explanatory options (Main HTML file name, destination folder
location, HTML page name etc.)

Then click export

It's now just a matter of uploading the folder to the web and posting a link :-)

Here's an example page I just made:

http://tinyurl.com/b4otk

About 1 minute to create, start to finish, using the method described
above (I didn't do any brightness, contrast sharpening adjustments.
Just a resizing)

HTH.
