Hello Collin, Having only shot youth soccer from the sidelines, I can tell you that 400 wouldn't feel too long. The tricky thing is, that the action really moves around the field - likely much quicker than you can. So as the action moves towards you, something as short as 50mm to 85mm might be needed/wanted. As the action moves away across the field or towards the goals (opposite of where you are) really long lenses help. A zoom can help in these situations, unless you have two bodies and two different lenses on them. Of course, then you run into the issue of holding/handling both of them because for stability and comfort you really want to put the long lens on a monopod.
