I am a strange guy, I bought my *ist DS so I could mount my classic M42
lenses on it and use it like my Bessaflex TM in digital. So far, it

I, too, am strange in that regard. I originally justified the -DS purchase because of my old P-30T Pentax and the two or three mediocre lenses I had for it. Now it's been a hoot buying ancient gear for cheap and twiddling with it.

seems to be just what I was after. I also have other bad habits - I do
not have any Microsoft products, I use Linux and all the free software
that comes with it.

Ssh! That kinda talk will start a neverending holy war. ;) But
you're not alone.

I'll pipe up as another linux-friendly digicammer. I have installed the Winders Pentax software for the -DS and can honestly say that it sucks just like every other "included" software that typically comes with hardware. Pity one needs to buy a few hundred dollars of additional software to make a vaguely high-quality and painless workflow.

So I am trying to automate my workflow, using some tools that run on
Linux and scripting them in Perl. I am using exiftool, dcraw, and
imagemagick(convert) to take my raw PEF files and massage them into
something worth looking at. This one, however, I converted using the
UFdraw import tool in The Gimp (the Linux version of Photoshop). Direct
from .PEF to JPG, resized, some minor image level adjustment and USM
applied.

I've got a scriptie to do something very similar. It nabs them, and does a quick-n-dirty RAW convertion on them. For any hand-editing or adjustment of the RAW conversion, I'll use 'ufraw'. Better (more control) than any of the gimp import tools I've found. Only trouble is it's best used with the D70 (that's what the author has). There are a couple of hacks I did in the code to make it work better with the -DS. Also, the color temp info and ICC profiles don't seem to work quite right with the -DS. I've got a color calibration card and I'm going to generate at least a tungsten, daylight, and overcast color temp profile for the -DS when I get a chance.

Hope you like it!
