There's absolutely no need to tie your processing to your access point. At present I'm connected to the net via my local ISP (Earthlink, in San Jose), but the machine I'm using to prepare this message is located in New York. When I'm travelling I can either use a pay-as-you-go internet connection (such as the one I have in the UK through Virgin.net), or use an internet cafe (or any other method of getting on to the 'net, such as a friend's machine). Then I can still connect to my panix account in New York, and work in a familiar environment no matter wher I may be, physically.
