Seriously, it's a common name around there though I don't know the real etymology.

I have been told the original ancestor was a French mercenary (Robillard or some such) who fought for Mary, Queen of Scots during her attempt on the English throne. The attempt failed, of course, and he felt it safer to stay in Scotland, and, apparently, change his name.
My fathers family is from Auchtermuchty.
