I don't remember when Westhampton closed down, but we were racing in around 1964-65. By the time you were laying down rubber I'd been in the San Francisco area about four or five years.
Every now and then I get out to Infinion Raceway (used to be called Sears Point) to catch some sort of race. They've got drags, sports car events, motorcycle events .... nice area, too, out in the country, and closer than Monterey and Leguna Seca - but that's a different situation - entirely more "civilized." <LOL> Shel > [Original Message] > From: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > To: <[email protected]> > Date: 6/9/2005 12:04:45 PM > Subject: Re: PESO - This morning's shoot > > Don't remember Westhampton, although that was not my home turf, and it may have been gone by the early seventies. You're right. I was referring to New York National Speedway. We used to stay in the Riverhead motel, which was, of course, in Riverhead. We would drive in from Chicago or from wherever our last race was on Friday night and head out on Sunday night. Did it just about once a month in the summer from 1972 to 1976. The shows were booked in by the consortium that owned the track. They owned Detroit Dragway and Kansas City International Raceway as well. We had a contract to run all three. Sometimes it was KC on one weekend, Detroit on the following Tuesday, and NY on the next weekend. When the schedule gods shined on us, we could sometimes book Englishtown, New Jersey on the second Tuesday. We ran Gary, Indiana, US 30 Dragstrip every Wednesday. Great times and bad motels. The best days of my life.
