well, we were planning to carry the houseboat over the abandoned logging
road, set it up with the tower on the roof and the blind on top so that we
could look down into the nests, but that got impractical after we found that
they had invited the black flies.

A canoeing acquaintance told me that he once (and only
once!) paddled into a heron nesting area (rookery?).
The birds set up an awful racket and began vomiting
half-digested fish on him, with astonishing range and
accuracy. Good thing you had a long lens!
