Amita,

My wife and I have stayed 'off mountain' both times when we went.
First time, we had rented a 'vacation cottage' in Lynnville (5 minutes away).
Second time, we rented at a sky lodge near Banner Elk (10 minutes away).
Next time, we may do the Pixie Inn Motel (2 minutes off the mountain).

The area is really rural North Carolina, an hour and a half from
civilization (defined as having a Best Buy for me). There is a fair
amount of vacationing and rentals in the area as the North Carolinians
get out of the hot coastal plaines and up into the cooler
mountains...looks like skying in the winter too, but very weak as
resort areas go. Few restaurants, little shopping, just a place to
enjoy the outdoors with your family.

All of this presents some problems for me as I try to convince my wife
that we are going on 'vacation' to GFM. Lucky for me she likes the
trip thru Kentucky and has begun to enjoy the photo competition.

Regards, Bob S.
