The size is not too critical.  If the replacement is a lot smaller it could
be a problem.  I put a bigger ball from a junker into my Vivitar 28mm by
drilling out the hole a bit.  Works fine.

If you manage to launch the tiny spring into that black hole at the end of
the universe I found that a small piece of a square cross section rubber
band in the hole works well.
