All hearsay as I've never touched an 18-35, but several people have remarked to me that they had one and sold it as it wasn't very sharp or satisfying to them with their film bodies.
I just bought an FA20-35/4 AL for use on the *ist DS, did some walkaround photos with it today as test. It is very sharp and contrasty, at all focal length settings, and has lovely out of focus rendering too. Nice lens ... I like it more than the DA16-45/4 AL: it's much more compact and seems to perform even better.
