DSP is a fancy name for a processor optimized to do fast repetitive
work.

Most Canons have some sort of 386 processor and run a version of MS-DOS
(that's one reason why I don't like them)

Kodaks, some Minolta, Pentax and HP cameras run Digita:

(on Digita it is easy to run third party software)

I searched the web for any info on the *ist D / DS but couldn't find
anything
