No problem. The feature is there, how did you miss it? Just go to
Batch, Set Rename Options, set name pattern as $N ("old file name,
without extension"), and right below that are three fields for
"Replace text" "with"... Easy enough, no? Just put dsc_ into the
replace field and put 38_ into the with field. As you see, you can
replace up to three text strings on each file. I use it for renaming
my working files (which might end up like "w_DSC0001_sRGB_1318.jpg" to
"FV_0001.jpg") easily.

Remember, you can start Thumbnail view in Irfanview by pressing T (or
make a dedicated desktop shortcut with that option, see help), and
then select only the files you need to rename, e.g. all the shots with
team 38, and rename them. Then select the other team, etc...
