I have to write down the settings with film and wait 4 days to get the first
prints from the lab.

I did the following for flower macros: I did 3-4 films noting down (mobile phone voice recording) exposures and bracketing +-1 on negative. In all cases, my metering was done off my palm, using spot-metering; the camera was set to overexpose by 1/3 of a stop (ISO setting to 320 on a 400 film). The films came back and I found out that the spot-metering on palm was a good exposure. I no longer jot down nor bracket. For targets beyond my reach, I now practice metering off something in the vicinity of my target which "looks like" my palm.

YMMV (and I may get instances when I am not happy and need to readjust the above),
