Hi Chris,

Yes, I saw the episode you mentioned. Interesting, but i thought the
approach was too light-hearted, and too 'dumbed down'. Personally i fail
to see the point of just giving the participants digital cameras without
seeing through the whole process. I'd like to find out about their
reactions to the whole digital workflow (although this was hinted at by
one participant who produces collages by scanning his film-based pics
onto the computer for manipulation).

I have only seen the one programme, the one you mention. Frankly I
thought the idea of using a camera-phone was plain daft. They should be
using the sort of gear that would be considered semi-pro (*ist D, 20D,
D70 etc etc) because that's what most people who would watch the
programme would be using, or aspiring to use. Camera-phone snappers would
not make a point of watching the programme IMO.

And what did we learn? Well, no surprises with the cameraphone. Too
limiting in scope, and poor handling due to multifunctionality. The point
and shoot user seemed happy enough but for serious work, no way.

Sure, the scope of the programme is limited (with only 40 minutes
duration) but I just found it too glib and actually a bit patronising.
People looking in, like you and me, would already have an interest in
photography, and wouldn't need things spelled out for us. I've yet to see
a documentary about the mechanics of photography - especially digital -
that has broken from this twee mould.

That said, and if you approach it as light-hearted wallpaper, I suppose
it's okay. I won't be particularly chewing at the bit waiting for the
next one. If I remember it's on, I'll catch it if I can...

Sorry I'm not more positive about it!

Cheers,
  Cotty
