Hi Richard,
Freiburg is a less known, but interesting spot.
Less means mainly Japanese tourists, while the Americans stick to
Heidelberg ;-)
How do you travel around? What do you look for?
Nrnberg has some interesting views of the old, rebuild town (castle, wall
etc.). I can't tell you any really interesting spots in Erlangen, although
I've studied there for several years.
Munich is a rich, wealthy town. The main focus on buildings may be baroque
style, while almost anything else is visible, too (e.g. a 'Chinese' Tower
in the beer garden of the 'English Garden' with 'Bavarian' brass musique).
Since your main focus is on South Germany, I'd recommend e.g. Regensburg
(old and narrow town, not really what you would call pretty, but very
appealing to me). More picturesque towns may be Dinkelsbhl or Rothenburg
o.d.T.
Have a look in, when you come to Freiburg :-)
And Basel in Switzerland is even closer than Strassburg in France.
Enjoy your trip
Martin
