Thank you Mark, You are a prim(e)rose :-)
Have thanked you off list, but want to express my gratitude public too.

I am impressed. Impressed by two things. First the thing that you have made
time to test out this combination, for me a new member of the list. A
troublesome member too ;-)
Hey, it wasn't entirely altruistic; I was interested in seeing what this
combination could do myself! Even though I own both items (the Vivitar
S1 70-210 and the Pentax 1.7x AF TC) I'd never thought how useful they
could be together. I found the results pretty exciting. Consider an
ist-D or ist-Ds along with this teleconverter and lens and you have a
pretty potent package in a very portable size/weight.

I wonder how the Pentax-A 70-210 F4.0 would.
I've been wanting to buy an S1 for some time so I can compare them but
they always sell on Ebay for a lot more than I am prepared to pay for a
non Pentax lens. Is the Vivitar better than the Pentax?
Faster, anyway. You obviously haven't been looking long enough. I was able to get a Like New in Box version of the S1 70-210mm ver. 2 for less than $70.00 US including shipping. It's a sweet lens even if it's not A enabled. The only reason I don't use it more is that I have the F 70-210, which is fine except when that little bit of "extra aperture" is needed and then of course it's too late since the Vivitar is sitting in the lens cabinet at home...
