DSLRs are the only remaining way for digital camera manufacturers to have a reasonable profit margin as compact digital cameras have turned into a commodity. it is a given that the low end of the DSLR market will become the same in 2 or 3 years. the only digital cameras without razor thin margins are going to be the high end DSLR models. Canon was the only company last fiscal year to make money on compact digital cameras, and is the only company most analysts believe when they say they are going to make money this year in compact digital cameras.
