I don't understand the importance of print size. If the two systems capture the same amount of information about a scene, then they will produce prints of the same quality at any size. I don't think the statement is meaningless.

The presumption is that the negative will be subjected to scanning.
That's the great equalizer that brings film down to the same level as digital capture.
My printer at work scans a 35mm neg at about 2000x3000 pixels, for example.
