They don't, on both statements :-(
That’s the error! 
The other thing is that the aperture ring doesn’t lock in auto position. I
believe it is supposed to do so.

In shorts, it doesn’t work. It's simple as that. And I'm depressed.

If you're not using the lens in the A mode you must put the camera 
manual Manual mode, in any other mode the DS works always with the lens 
wide open.

You can also take the lens off the camera, if you don't push the 
aperture lever the diaphragm should close to the position indicated by 
the aperture ring. If you push the lever it should open wide but as soon 
as you release the lever it should close again.
