Hi Joe ... I see many more possibilities in this photo than you've presented, some of which may have resulted in a more interesting photo. As it is, it's an intriguing shot, and has me curious to see more, but it may not have been the best shot.
Years ago it was suggested to me that, when photographing something like this - any subject that's static, really, or any subject that's moving very little - one should make numerous exposures, slightly moving the camera or vantage point, shooting vertically and horizontally. I can envision this as more interesting in a horizontal shot, or one in which the sun is directly behind one of the horses, or the bird on the circular thingy, or where the sun was more to the right and not behind any object and with a little more space around it. I don't know if any of those would be better visually, but I suspect a slightly different framing may well add more interest and punch to this photo. Now, how many frames of the gate did you shoot? It would be nice if you shot a few more and put them up for comparison purposes.
