My experience suggests that different lenses do have differing amounts of purple flare for some reason. For example, check out crop 2 of Rob's test of the Voigtlander 125/2.5 vs the Pentax A* 135/1.8:

This seems to be related to sharpness in this case...?

Yep, there it is. In my shot, the subject I focused on, the gargoyle, came out fine. It has no purple fringe. It is the OOF background elements that show it.
