While sharpness and contrast and high resolution numbers are good, sometimes lenses of "lower specs" are passed over because they don't "measure up" to some arbitrary contemporary standards. Perhaps you recall from a past thread that I've been looking for lenses that provide an older look and feel to them. These lenses can often be had rather inexpensively (although some have become "classics" and are tres cher) and definitely can add a unique look and feel to one's photographs. In this age of the "generic" photo, that can only be a good thing.
