My first Pentax was an MZ-50 I bought new with a FA 28-80/3.5-5.6
(black!) while on hols in Barcelona in 1999. At the time I tried (side
by side, on two different days at the same shop) the similarly priced
Canon, Nikon and Minolta. The Canon and Nikon I eliminated quickly. I
was finally won over by the fast focus of the -50 (compared to all
four) and the thought that by beloved godfather also had a Pentax
(KM). I think this was unfair on Minolta that, in hindsight, had a
better feature set and probably a better-built product, but i made up
by buying the 505si Super as a present for my best-man.
The rest is history. The cripple-mount put me on the track to a
-6/-5n, the latter being the winner through circumstance. I still use
the -50 for B&W with the FA50/1.7, though I sold the lens. It has been
a while since I last put some film through it, but the forthcoming
bairn should see to it. Except if an MZ-S pops up, in which case it
will have to make room. If you don't need DOF-preview or re-A lenses,
the MZ-50 is a very nice camera.
