I've attempted to photograph the Elk at Pt Reyes. I wasn't expecting to do so, and therefore didn't have a long enough lens, so I viewed the elk through the finder of my friend's camera. He was using a 400mm, iirc. The elk in that area, while not particularly afraid of human contact, seem to keep their distance. Based on the experience, a 270mm focal length may fall a little short. At least be prepared with something a little longer if at all possible.
