While working on my friend's boat in my driveway I received a
message from the photo shop. I decided to stop by rather than call. They
handed me a BG-10 grip for my MZ-S, after asking if I had been a good boy
this year! I now know what people were saying about it putting the MZ-S in
a class of its own. My thoughts follow.
As opposed to other vertical grips where the shutter release is on
the very top, the grip has a lower placement of the release. The shutter
release is like the one on the camera where you move it outward to get the
Depth of Field Preview. Definitely a nice touch where it is not a separate
lever.
The top is reserved for the remote control receiver (optional). The
lower placement complements the placement of the AE-Lock button on the back.
The remote control on/off switch is at the top.
The ON/OFF switch is below the AE-Lock button. The contour of the
grip is excellent. The cover matches the rest of the camera. And no, it is
not a metal grip. It is basically a third larger in size as the FG-10 grip,
and is basically the same principle where the estension of the grip enters
the battery compartment. It did take a quick look at the manual (in six
languages) to make sure I was attaching the grip correctly, and making sure
of all the controls. Because of the ingenious attachment method the tripod
mount is centered in the grip unlike the FG-10. And comparing the two
cameras and grips, there are no gaps with the BG-10 as with the FG-10. Only
upon thorough inspection that you can tell that there is a grip attached to
the MZ-S.
The one thing I do not like - and at the store I noticed that Canon
had the same arrangement - is that the camera strap lug is on the right
(shutter button) side. It would make sense to have it like the LX on the
side opposite the shutter release button. Where it is the strap has to be
moved out of the way, especially when shooting vertically. The sales clerk
at the store says that it is something I will get used to, and I will expect
a vertical grip on my other cameras.
On the Continuous Focus on the camera, I used it on some barrel
racing I shot last weekend. The pictures came out perfectly focused as the
rider was rounding a barrel and I locked focus and took the shot as she
approached me and the second barrel. I realize this is not an extremely
fast moving object, but was the only one available so far to me. My friend
commented that I could have sold many of the images if I had them available
after the event. She commented how you could see the expressions clearly on
the riders. This was with the TMZ ASA 3200 b&w film. I was amazed at the
lack of grain in the photos. It was much better than the ASA 1000 color
print photos I took. I am looking forward to getting a chance to take more
shots at the next rodeo.
I have been silent on the noise generated by the camera. When
advancing the film it is the same volume as the ZX-5 but it is a more
metallic (tinny) sound. Though I must admit that the rewind is 'loud'. The
first time it rewound there were a few heads that turned at the sound. I
would like to compare mine to another to see if they all sound that way. I
compared it to a Canon ??? and Nikon N80 in the store and both of them are
truly silent. The MZ-S has a different sound than I am used to, but it is
not silent by any means.
The MZ-S has quickly become a comfortable camera for me to use -
almost like the LX. Interesting enough when testing the rewind sound of
cameras in the store I was able to quickly find the Pentaz Function I
needed to leave the leader out. Those that are important to me are
ingrained now. I feel I can teach the camera to anyone now.
I will be testing the High-Speed Sync later tonight and tomorrow I
will be going to the beach and when not playing volleyball plan to shoot
friends playing and testing the apparent shutter lag. Up to now, I cannot
discern a lag, especially during the rodeo, but I will pay attention
tomorrow.
Happy shooting,
