It checks a few things at once: first, the consistency
of metering, the accuracy of the shutter and aperture
control, and the evenness of shutter travel.  All of
the slides should be exactly the same shade of blue or
grey (depending on the color of the sky), and no frame
should have light or dark bands (indicating a faulty
shutter).
