the people who do this a lot use a special trigger to fire the camera. i
haven't looked into the details, but i see it advertised in Outdoor
Photographer periodically. i don't know what it is compatible with.

Never really trying to shoot lightning before, I basically went on the
following theory:
Set camera to Av, set to a small aperature (essentially to extend the
shutter speed - I believe it was 20s), press the shutter and wait for
lightning.
